The Chovos Halevavos, “Duties of the Heart,” written by Rabbeinu Bachya ibn Pakuda, was the earliest work about the service of Hashem written in an organized and systematic fashion. It is universally recognized as the most comprehensive and authoritative work on faith in Hashem and the obligation to serve him. The book is a section of the Chovos Halevavos called the Sha’ar Habitachon, “The Gate of Trust,” which describes the benefits of trusting in Hashem and the steps necessary for one to attain that trust. It demonstrates how to have confidence in Hashem even during difficult financial times, and reconciles this trust with our obligation to work for a living.
