This book is a collection of 120 columns that have appeared in the English-language edition of Forward and other newspapers since January 1997. Feldberg writes in his introduction that “this book is not a complete history of American Jewry, but a collection of vignettes and episodes that, taken together, limn the overriding directions and tendencies of the much larger tapestry that comprises the American Jewish experience.” The pieces are organized by subject and time period, beginning with the era before the Civil War, when American Jewry was demanding and obtaining its political, religious, and civil rights. There also is a section defined as “American Jewish Pride” that chronicles stories of achievement and success in the fields of sports; the war against disease; labor unions; and the building, copper, retail, garment, radio, food, and clothes industries. A final section concerns American Zionism, the Holocaust, and the founding of the State of Israel.
